My Take
Katie Melua has one of those backstories that genuinely moves me: born in Kutaisi, Georgia, raised in Belfast and London, and somehow blending all of it into a singular voice. I love that her sound sits between jazz, folk and pop without ever feeling forced. Discovered and shaped early by Mike Batt on the small Dramatico label, she proved you do not need a major to break through. Receiving Georgia's Order of Honour shows she never cut ties with where she came from. To me she is proof that a quiet, understated singer can still command an enormous international audience on warmth alone.
