Kazuhito Tadano

Most Japanese pitchers reach the major leagues the same way: star in Nippon Professional Baseball first, then get posted. Kazuhito Tadano did it backwards. He went from Rikkyo University straight to the United States, pitched for the Cleveland Indians, and only afterward came home to play for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. That inversion is what interests me. It means every step of his career had to be argued for rather than assumed. What I find even more telling is what he did afterward: scouting for the Fighters and, for a season, coaching pitchers on their farm team, well out of the spotlight, working with players nobody is writing about yet. A man who took the long way around is probably the right person to sit with young arms taking the long way around themselves. His stat line will never impress anyone. His route still does.
