My Take

Kelvin Hayden has the kind of resume that earns instant respect from me: a Chicago kid out of Hubbard High and the University of Illinois, drafted in the second round by the Colts in 2005. What I admire most is that he chose cornerback, the loneliest job in football. Out in open space against the fastest receivers, one beat slow and it is six points, and nobody is coming to help. The nerve that role demands is rare. He climbed all the way from the South Side to the top of the American game, and even in retirement those snaps he locked down still count.
