My Take
Kenji Eda took the strangest possible route. A trade ministry official who served as executive secretary to Prime Minister Hashimoto, he stepped off the elite escalator into parties that kept changing their names. Critics read that as drifting. I read it differently: a man with Harvard on his record who keeps picking the least profitable road.
