My Take
Kenneth Lay is, for me, less a person than a cautionary parable. He built Enron from nothing, rose from rural Missouri through the University of Houston to the very top, then drove the company into what was, at the time, the largest bankruptcy in history through accounting fraud. Convicted on ten counts and dead before sentencing, he left a story almost too neat in its tragedy. I find him impossible to fully condemn and impossible to defend. What fascinates me is how cleanly his arc maps the seduction and rot of unchecked corporate ambition. He endures, in my mind, as capitalism's most chilling textbook.
