Kim Peek

Kim Peek deserves to be remembered with reverence, not as a curiosity. Born in Salt Lake City with congenital brain differences, he memorized over ten thousand books and became the inspiration for Raymond in Rain Man. Yet the most moving part of his story is not the raw capacity of his memory but how he spent his later years sharing it, traveling to give people courage. He embodied the truth that difference is not deficit but identity. Society made daily life hard for him, yet he answered with generosity. He passed in 2009, but his example endures, and it humbles me.
