My Take

Kimberley Santos holds a special place in my imagination simply for where she began. A model from Guam who was crowned Miss World 1980, she carried the name of a tiny Pacific island onto the largest of stages. I am drawn to stories where the periphery upstages the center, where a small homeland produces a global winner against every demographic expectation. Beauty pageant titles are too easily dismissed as fleeting, but standing at the world's summit, however briefly, becomes a permanent part of a person's story.
