Klaus Voormann

Klaus Voormann is one of those rare people who you'd call a Renaissance man without any irony at all — the guy is legitimately great at two completely different art forms. He stumbled into Beatles history back in 1960 when he wandered into a Hamburg club and befriended John, Paul, George, and Ringo before they were even the Beatles, and that friendship defined his whole career in the best possible way. His cover art for Revolver won a Grammy in 1967 and it's still one of the most iconic album sleeves ever made, this gorgeous collage of ink portraits that somehow captures the entire psychedelic spirit of an era. Then on top of that he played bass for Manfred Mann, sessioned on Lou Reed's Transformer, Carly Simon's You're So Vain, and a pile of John Lennon solo records. I honestly can't think of many people who've left fingerprints on more classic recordings without ever being the frontman.
