My Take
Koji Uehara, born April 3, 1975 in Neyagawa, Osaka, is my favorite counterexample to the idea that you need overwhelming velocity to survive at the top. He pitched for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, then for the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball, and he did it as both a starter and a reliever. That flexibility matters. Plenty of pitchers cross the Pacific with one job description and break when asked to do another; he reinvented himself and kept getting outs. His weapons were command and nerve rather than raw power, and he threw them at some of the best hitters alive without flinching. What I find just as interesting is what came after. He moved into broadcasting and YouTube, and unlike many retired athletes who read the room and say nothing, he actually has a voice of his own. Being excellent at the thing and then being interesting about the thing are two different talents. Uehara has both, which is rarer than his statistics alone would suggest.
