Kotoōshū Katsunori

Kotoōshū fascinates me as a bridge between cultures. A young man from Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria who entered sumo in 2002 and reached the top division in just two years is remarkable enough, but what I admire most is how fully he embraced a tradition utterly foreign to him. His 203 cm frame gave him a graceful, sweeping style, yet the deeper story is his commitment, staying on as the coach Naruto to raise the next generation. To master Japan's most ritual-bound sport from the outside, then give back to it, takes a rare blend of talent and humility that I find quietly moving.
