Kumi Sasaki

Being captain of a Japanese idol group sounds like a decorative title. It is not. Kumi Sasaki joined Hiragana Keyakizaka46 in 2016, was made captain in 2018, kept the role when the group was rebuilt and renamed Hinatazaka46 in 2019, and carried it until she left in 2025. Think about what a rebranding actually means for the members: you are asked to redefine who you are in public, on a deadline, while the cameras keep rolling. Somebody has to hold the room together during that, and it was her. At 168 cm she is the one your eye finds first in a group shot, yet she never struck me as a person who pushed to the front. She also works as a presenter and actor, and I suspect that side of her gets more interesting now that the idol chapter is closed.
