My Take
Ledisi is the kind of artist whose résumé quietly humbles you. Born in New Orleans, educated at Berkeley, and so determined that when major labels passed she simply built her own. Her name means to bring forth in Yoruba, which feels almost too fitting for someone who creates across singing, composing, acting and writing. What I value most is that voice, rich with soul and jazz, that needs no gimmicks to command a room. She is a craftsman's diva, less interested in spectacle than in substance, and that earns my deep respect.
