My Take

Lee J. Cobb was one of those character actors whose mere presence reorganized a scene. Born Leo Jacoby in New York, NYU-trained and Broadway-forged as the original Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, he brought a coiled intensity to film, most unforgettably as the furious juror in 12 Angry Men. He specialized in arrogant, abrasive men yet could lend real dignity to judges and lawmen. At 180 cm with that low, commanding voice, his very physicality was a performance. He died in 1976, but I still find his weighty, lived-in presence impossible to forget.
