My Take

I find Lena Dunham fascinating because she refuses to separate her roles: she creates, writes, directs, produces, and stars, often all at once. Girls remains one of the defining television shows of its decade, and becoming the first woman to win the Directors Guild of America Award for comedy directing is a genuinely historic marker. What I admire most is her appetite for discomfort — she writes people who are messy, vain, and recognizable, and she puts herself in the frame without protection. She has never been a consensus figure, but artists who provoke real arguments are rarer and more valuable than artists everyone politely agrees on.
