Lena Waithe

Lena Waithe interests me because she's a builder, not just a performer. Winning that Emmy for comedy writing was historic, but I'm more struck by how she uses every role she takes on, actor, producer, screenwriter, showrunner, to decide whose stories get centered. The Chi roots itself in her Chicago, and Queen & Slim turns a chase into something mythic. There's a clear authorial intent running through her work that I trust. She isn't chasing prestige for its own sake; she's expanding who gets to be the protagonist. That sense of purpose, paired with genuine craft, is rarer than people admit. I'm watching closely.
