Lil' Kim is, to me, a study in sheer force of will. Emerging from Bedford–Stuyvesant in Brooklyn into a hip-hop world that gave women little room, she seized her own narrative and her own sexuality as weapons, earning the title Queen of Rap. So much of the freedom today's female rappers enjoy traces back to the path she cut. I admire that she was never just one thing — rapper, singer, model, actor — and that she's still standing, still commanding respect decades on.
