Risa Shinnabe

I'll be honest, the second I see a 173cm athlete out of Kirishima in Kagoshima who plays both indoor and beach volleyball, my brain just fills in "quietly tough, all core and grit" before I even know the details, and I stand by that read. Indoor volleyball already asks for ridiculous reflexes and timing, but beach? Playing on sand where every step swallows your foot and your legs are screaming by the second set is a whole different kind of stubborn. She helped Japan to Olympic bronze in London in 2012 before retiring in 2020, and you can usually feel it on people like her, that no-nonsense, did-the-reps posture that holds up long after the playing days. A Kagoshima kid who chose the harder surface twice over. I respect that a lot.
