My Take

Lisa Murkowski is, to my mind, one of the more genuinely independent figures in American politics. From the remote port of Ketchikan, Alaska, through Georgetown law, she became the first woman to represent Alaska in Congress and stayed there since 2002. What I respect is her willingness to break with her party when conscience demands it, a rarity in an era of lockstep voting. That spine has cost her politically and won her admirers across the aisle. I'm less interested in left versus right than in officials who actually think for themselves, and on that measure she earns my attention.
