My Take

Lisa Tuttle deserves a far wider readership than she has, and that is exactly why I champion her. Houston-born and Syracuse-educated, she announced herself by winning the Astounding Award for Best New Writer in 1974, then went on to claim the Nebula, the Locus, and the BSFA awards. Moving fluidly between science fiction, fantasy, and horror, she even compiled an Encyclopedia of Feminism, which tells you something about the breadth of her mind. What I prize most is her short fiction: precise, observant, quietly unsettling. Awards aside, read a single Tuttle story and it lingers. She is a writer who works by stealth, and I admire that enormously.
