Lou Doillon

Lou Doillon is one of those rare people who could have coasted entirely on her lineage — daughter of Jane Birkin and director Jacques Doillon, half-sibling of Charlotte Gainsbourg — and nobody would have said a word. Instead she built something genuinely her own. I first got drawn in by her effortless, slightly undone model presence, that tall Parisian slouch that somehow reads as elegantly disheveled, and then she turned around and put out Places (2012), a debut album that felt like late-night confessional folk filtered through French cool. Winning the Victoires de la Musique for Female Artist of the Year in 2013 was well earned — her voice has this unadorned intimacy that gets under your skin without trying. The Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres on top of all that just confirms what you already sensed: she's the real thing, not a famous last name in a nice coat.
