My Take
Loveli — born Izumi Shirahama in Matsuyama, Ehime, in 1989 — works under a single mononym, and I think that choice tells you something. It sounds light, almost throwaway, which makes it easy to underestimate the person carrying it. She built her name in Japanese fashion magazines, moved into television as a tarento, and has also worked as an artist. That last part is the piece I find most interesting. Modelling is a profession that fixes you permanently on the wrong side of the lens: you are the image, never the author of it. Crossing over into making things rather than being photographed is a harder move than it looks, and plenty of models talk about it without ever doing it. Before modelling for JJ she worked as a Fuji TV reporter, a yoga instructor and a weather forecaster. A girl from Matsuyama who became her own brand in Tokyo.
