My Take
Madonna Wayne Gacy, real name Stephen Bier, owns one of the most audaciously twisted stage names in rock, splicing a pop icon with a serial killer. As keyboardist and percussionist for Marilyn Manson from 1989 to 2007, he was a quiet architect of that band's unsettling, theatrical sound. I am fascinated by sidemen like him, the ones who build the atmosphere while the frontman screams in the spotlight. The textures and dread underneath those records owe a real debt to players like Bier. To me, these shadow-builders deserve far more credit than the genre usually gives them.
