My Take
What draws me to Malcolm Barrett is how he refuses to be boxed in. A Brooklyn kid who passed through the famously rigorous Stuyvesant High School, he turned that intellect into a career spanning acting, screenwriting and rapping. I find his on-screen presence quietly magnetic rather than showy, the kind of actor who anchors a scene without demanding it. Born in 1980, he is squarely in his prime, and I suspect his best work as a versatile character actor is still ahead of him. He is the sort of performer I keep an eye on precisely because he chooses substance over spectacle.
