Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart is one of those players who makes you appreciate basketball beyond the highlight reel. The guy out of Flower Mound, Texas never dazzled you with flashy scoring numbers, but he was the kind of point guard who made every opposing ball-handler absolutely miserable — and I mean that as the highest compliment. Winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 was a massive deal, because only Gary Payton had ever won it at point guard before him. He was a cornerstone of Boston's defensive identity for nearly a decade, bringing that relentless, physical, take-it-personally energy on every single possession. The NBA Hustle Award says everything: this is a guy who dove on loose balls when nobody was watching, took charges that made you wince, and just flat-out competed. Pure heart in a league that often rewards flash over substance.
