Mario Kassar

Mario Kassar is, to me, the embodiment of high-stakes Hollywood showmanship. The Beirut-born producer co-founded Carolco Pictures and bankrolled muscular crowd-pleasers like the first three Rambo films, Terminator 2, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, and Stargate. There is real audacity in a man arriving from the Middle East and reaching the commercial summit of American cinema. Carolco eventually collapsed, but the studio's explosive run defined an era of blockbuster entertainment. I have an affection for producers who gamble big to thrill audiences rather than play it safe; Kassar bet on spectacle, and for a glorious stretch the bets paid off.
