Marion Bailey

Marion Bailey is exactly the kind of actor I gravitate toward: a British craftsperson who built her reputation through patient, truthful work rather than celebrity. Her long collaboration with Mike Leigh is the heart of it, from Meantime through Vera Drake, Mr. Turner and Peterloo. Leigh's improvisatory process is unforgiving, and being chosen again and again says everything about the honesty she brings to a role. Her Critics' Circle nomination for Mr. Turner felt earned, not lucky. To me she represents the quiet British acting tradition where the work, not the fame, is the point, and I find that deeply admirable.
