My Take
Mark Wahlberg interests me most as a case study in reinvention. As a teenager he took part in violent, racially motivated attacks and was convicted of felony assault at 16, serving 45 days in jail. The leap from Marky Mark, a rapper few took seriously, to the actor who anchored Boogie Nights is one of Hollywood's great second acts, and I don't think he gets enough credit for it. What I admire is his refusal to coast: he commits to absurd comedies like Ted with the same intensity he brings to dramas, and his producing career shows real business instinct. He may never be the most versatile actor of his generation, but his discipline and work ethic make him one of the most dependable, and I respect that enormously.
