My Take

Markus Suttner is the kind of footballer I instinctively root for. An Austrian left-back born in 1987 in small-town Hollabrunn, he built a career out of the least glamorous, most thankless job on the pitch: tracking up and down the flank, defending first and supplying width second. In a sport that lavishes attention on goalscorers, the player who quietly farms one side of the field for a decade rarely gets remembered. That is exactly why I think he should be. Now retired, he is the sort of dependable craftsman whose value you only fully appreciate once he is gone.
