My Take
Masahiko Kondo, known as Matchy, makes no sense to me, in the best way. He arrived with 'Sneaker Blues,' became the defining teen idol with 'Ginghiragin ni Sarigenaku,' turned up as a student in 'Kinpachi-sensei,' and eventually took home a Japan Record Award. For most performers that is an entire life's work. Then he went and got serious about cars. Not celebrity-hobby serious: he raced competitively, founded Kondo Racing in 2000, and still runs it as an owner in Super Formula and Super GT. Consider what that costs. A man who reached the summit of one industry chose to line up at the bottom of another, in front of people who did not care what his singles sold. I respect that nerve more than any of the hits.
