Masanobu Andō

Masanobu Ando took a newcomer award in 1996 for Takeshi Kitano's Kids Return, about as good a start as a Japanese actor can get. Then he did something I find fascinating: he steered away from the safe domestic star route. His Shogo Kawada in Battle Royale is still unnervingly quiet, and the directors who kept calling were the difficult ones, Takashi Miike, Chen Kaige, and Tsai Ming-liang, whose No No Sleep gives him almost nothing to say and works anyway. That tells you he can hold a frame without dialogue. These days he directs as well. Past fifty, born in Kawasaki in 1975, and still refusing to settle.
