Masumi Miyazaki

Masumi Miyazaki was born in Nagoya in 1968, graduated from the private Horikoshi High School, and made her film debut at fifteen in the 1983 release Aiko 16-sai. Two years later she was chosen as the eleventh Clarion Girl — in that period, one of the most reliable launchpads into national recognition a young Japanese performer could get. So far, so conventional. What interests me is the turn that followed. She went on to appear in films including XX Utsukushiki Kyoki and Yaneura no Sanposha, work that involved nude performance and sat a long way from the safe, marketable image that a campaign-girl title tends to lock a woman into. Moving from being promoted as a face to being cast as an actor is a difficult and often costly pivot, and plenty of careers simply stall inside the comfortable version instead. That she took the harder road strikes me as the detail actually worth remembering about her.
