Matt Cameron

Matt Cameron is, to my ears, the beating heart of Seattle rock. A San Diego native who anchored both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, he is that rare drummer who can navigate dizzying odd time signatures and still hit like a freight train when the song demands it. I never tire of the way he balances technical precision with raw power. People underestimate drummers, but Cameron understands the architecture of a band better than almost anyone, and the dense, muscular grunge sound owes its foundation to his playing. He is an unsung hero, and I love him for it.
