My Take

What I admire about Trey Songz is the texture beneath the smooth R&B exterior. Plenty of singers can do the sensual whisper, but Songz carries the dust of Petersburg, Virginia in his tone, and being plucked by Troy Taylor into Songbook and Atlantic in 2003 reads like a genuine come-up rather than a manufactured one. He writes, sings, and produces, which tells me he treats the craft as architecture, not just performance. His Sagittarian restlessness has led to plenty of ups and downs, but I find the whole arc more interesting for it. He is an artist I keep watching.
