My Take

Matteo Garrone is, for my money, one of the most fearless directors working in Italy. What fascinates me is his range: he can stare straight into the brutal underworld of Gomorrah, then turn around and conjure the dark fairy-tale poison of Tale of Tales. That swing between gritty realism and ornate fantasy is the mark of a genuine artist, not a craftsman repeating a formula. His shelf of European Film Awards and David di Donatello wins is deserved, yet I value most that he never loses a grounded, human gaze. Whenever Garrone releases something new, I want to sit down and pay full attention.
