My Take
Michael Berryman has my profound respect. Born with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, leaving him without sweat glands, hair, or fingernails, he could easily have stayed out of the public eye. Instead he turned a singular appearance into a weapon, carving out an unshakable place in cult and horror cinema starting with The Hills Have Eyes. Transforming a hard condition into an identity, and that identity into genuine craft, is a remarkable act of will. Still working decades after his 1948 birth, he answered a looks-obsessed industry with sheer presence and ability. To me he is a truly irreplaceable character actor.
