Michael McDonald

Michael McDonald is one of those voices that stops you cold the first time you hear it — that deep, smoky, soulful tenor coming out of a guy from St. Louis, Missouri feels almost unfair. He quietly revolutionized the Doobie Brothers when he joined in 1975, steering the band away from boogie-rock and into something far more sophisticated and blue-eyed soul, and songs like "What a Fool Believes" became genuine classics. Before that, he was already sharpening his chops as a backing vocalist for Steely Dan, which tells you everything about his musicianship. His solo career brought more of that warm, aching sound, and watching him become a kind of beloved cultural touchstone — earnestly parodied, endlessly sampled — only makes me appreciate the genuine article even more. Nobody sounds quite like Michael McDonald, and that's rare.
