Michael Schenker

Michael Schenker is one of those guitarists who makes you stop and just listen — not because he's flashy, but because every note he plays feels like it actually means something. As a teenager he played lead guitar in the Scorpions, the band his brother Rudolf had co-founded, then pulled off something almost unheard of: leaving a band that was on the rise to join UFO, where he proceeded to lay down some of the most soulful, melodically inventive hard rock guitar of the 1970s. Phenomenon and Lights Out are stone-cold classics. When he struck out on his own with the Michael Schenker Group in 1980, he proved his identity wasn't tied to any one band — it lived in his fingers. The guy has had a turbulent career full of lineup changes and personal struggles, but the playing? Consistently remarkable across four decades.
