Michele Carey

Michele Carey, a piano prodigy who won gold at the Chicago Music Festival at 13 before turning to acting, belongs to a generation of actresses whose presence outlasts their credits. Her turn as Joey in El Dorado, holding her own amid hard-bitten leading men, tells me plenty about her nerve and screen charisma. I'm drawn to performers from the 1960s and 70s precisely because they had to register through poise and timing alone, with none of today's self-promotion. The fact that she remained memorable in such company is, to me, the real measure of her talent. I suspect she was even sharper and more magnetic than her credits suggest.
