My Take
Mieko Nakabayashi's résumé reads like two careers stacked on top of each other: politician, civil servant, professor, political scientist. Born in Fukaya, Saitama, she studied at Washington State University before working in Japanese public life. That combination is rarer than it sounds. Plenty of academics comment on politics and plenty of politicians quote research, but very few have actually sat on both sides of the table, where one job rewards being careful and the other rewards being decisive. I find that kind of career harder to summarize and more interesting to think about than a straightforward one. She spent ten years as a staff member of the US Senate Budget Committee, served one term in the House of Representatives, and is now a professor at Waseda University and a director of TOPPAN Holdings. The substance of a career like that lives in committee rooms and lecture halls.
