Mika Kanai

Mika Kanai has spent decades in one of the least forgiving jobs in performance. Born in Tokyo in 1964 and trained at Toho Gakuen, she works as a singer, an actor and a voice actor, and she is still on the roster at Ken Production well past sixty. Voice work punishes age in a way screen acting does not, because the instrument itself wears out. Plenty of people can produce a bright, youthful character voice once. Producing it reliably, session after session, across a career measured in decades, is a feat of physical maintenance as much as artistry. The line on her record I keep returning to is the 2019 Kazue Takahashi Award, named for one of the pioneers of Japanese voice acting. A prize like that is less a trophy than an induction, the industry saying out loud that you belong to this lineage. I am a sucker for that kind of long-distance running.
