My Take
What I love about Mike D is the unlikely collision he embodies: a Vassar College kid from New York who helped turn the Beastie Boys into something far weirder and more durable than novelty rap. He could drum, produce, and write, and that musical literacy is exactly why the group could leap from punk to hip-hop to dense sample collage without losing its identity. I read him as the playful intellect inside a famously rowdy trio, and decades of staying relevant suggest a real curator's instinct. He never felt like a poser to me, just a genuine omnivore of sound.
