Mike Jones

As someone fond of Southern rap, I can't skip Mike Jones. Coming out of Houston via Swishahouse, he turned 2004's Still Tippin into a national announcement that the city's chopped-and-screwed sound had arrived, then backed it with Back Then. There was something endearingly shameless about the self-promotion, the famous habit of shouting his own phone number, that made him feel like a genuine entrepreneur as much as a rapper. He has since branched into acting, business, and writing. In a genre that chews people up fast, I respect him as a custodian of a specific Houston moment, and I think that legacy holds up.
