My Take
Mike Scully embodies the quiet dignity of comedy's backstage. A West Springfield kid who underachieved at school and dropped out of college, he somehow climbed to run The Simpsons as showrunner from 1997 to 2001, steering one of television's golden eras. I have enormous respect for that arc. Writers rarely get their names out front, yet the weight of making tens of millions of people laugh every single week is staggering. My honest hunch is that people who take the long, winding road into a career often understand humor best, because they have lived enough disappointment to know exactly what relief feels like.
