My Take

Mike Stern is one of my favorite guitarists, and not just for his pedigree. Sure, getting hired by Miles Davis says everything about his chops, as does the Best Jazz Guitarist nod in 1993. But what really moves me is his tone, that singing blend of rock grit and jazz nuance that feels like a human voice. Berklee-trained and tested in bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears, he chose substance over flash across more than twenty solo albums. To me Stern proves that melody and feeling outlast technique. He is a player who reminds you that fluency is nothing without heart.
