Mikey Whipwreck

I have a soft spot for Mikey Whipwreck, the consummate underdog. Born in Buffalo in 1973, he climbed from a losing gimmick to an ECW Triple Crown and a World Heavyweight title, which is exactly the arc that makes wrestling addictive. At five-foot-seven he was never the biggest man in the room, yet he reached the top of one of the sport's most extreme promotions by absorbing punishment and winning crowds. That kind of grit appeals to me more than raw athleticism ever could. A craftsman who earned everything the hard way, and I admire him for it.
