Mykelti Williamson

Mykelti Williamson is one of those actors who could have coasted forever on a single iconic role — playing Bubba in Forrest Gump is the kind of thing that brands you for life — but what I love about him is that he clearly refused to let that happen. He kept showing up in serious, meaty work: the gritty ensemble drama Boomtown, the ticking-clock intensity of 24, and then a genuinely moving turn as Boyd Crowder's nemesis in Justified. His Gabriel Maxson in Denzel Washington's Fences (2016) — a role he'd already lived on Broadway — is quietly devastating, the kind of performance that reminds you he's a craftsman, not just a familiar face. Born in St. Louis, trained at Los Angeles City College, he's been grinding in Hollywood for decades without ever turning into wallpaper, and that's rarer than it sounds.
