My Take

Nate Ruess is one of those rare singers where the voice does all the arguing for you — that soaring, slightly desperate tenor just grabs you by the collar. I followed him through The Format years and honestly thought it was a tragedy when they split, but then fun. happened and "We Are Young" became inescapable in 2012 in the best possible way. What I respect most is that he never sounds like he's performing cool; he sounds like he's about to cry or explode with joy, sometimes both at once. His 2015 solo album showed real ambition even if it didn't quite land commercially, and I think that swing-for-the-fences spirit is what makes him worth watching whenever he resurfaces.
