My Take

Nile Rodgers is proof that the most important person in a hit is often the one you cannot see on the cover. That instantly recognizable Chic guitar cut runs through hundreds of millions of records, much of it crafted for other artists. What I find most admirable is his refusal to abandon funk when disco became a punchline; he simply kept the groove alive until the world came back around. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Polar Music Prize are overdue acknowledgments of a craftsman who treats studio work as an art form. He is, in the truest sense, cool that has never gone out of style.
