My Take

Nnenna Freelon is the kind of artist I instinctively respect. A jazz singer who is also a composer, arranger, and producer, she does not just interpret songs, she builds them from the ground up. What draws me in is that jazz is the most exposed of art forms, where a single voice carries an entire emotional world. A Simmons University graduate who came to music with intellect as well as instinct, she strikes me as someone who has chased craft over fashion for decades. That kind of integrity, the refusal to chase trends, is exactly what I prize in a musician.
