My Take

Ofra Haza is, for me, one of the great unifying voices of the twentieth century. Rising from the modest Hatikva Quarter to global fame as the so-called Madonna of the East, she fused Yemenite Jewish tradition with modern pop in a way that felt utterly natural. Im Nin'alu still gives me chills, and Rolling Stone's placement of her among the greatest singers ever is richly deserved. What moves me most is how her tender mezzo-soprano dissolved borders at a time of deep division. Losing her at forty-two was a genuine tragedy, yet her bridge-building voice endures undiminished.
